Help your players develop good footwork, agility and reaction times with focused movement drills. You can use drills that focus exclusively on movement or drills that incorporate movement into skills practice. Alternate between these two types of movement drills to keep your players engaged.

Recovery Drills

During volleyball competition, players often have to get up quickly from the floor in order to reach a ball in time. Help players develop this recovery skill with the off-the-floor drill. Divide your players into two groups and have the groups line up behind the end lines on either end of the court. Have two players enter the court at a time on each side. All four players on the court should lie down on their stomachs. When you blow the whistle, they must leap up and into ready position. Toss a ball onto one side of the court when you blow the whistle. The four players then play out the point before returning to the back of the line and letting four new players onto the court.

Three Player Weave

Divide your players into groups of three. Have each group form a triangle with two players separated by only a few paces and a third player about 10 feet away. The players closest to each other occupy spaces one and three, and the farther player occupies space two. The player in space one begins the drill by tossing the ball to the player in space two, who sets the ball to the player in space three, who then passes the ball to the player in space one. After tossing the ball, the player in space one sprints to space two to occupy that position. After setting the ball, the player in space two sprints to space three to occupy that position. And, after passing the ball, the player in space three sprints to space one to occupy that position. Players continue tossing, setting and passing the ball, each time following the ball to the next position.

Lateral Hops

Help your players develop their balance and stability with lateral hopping drills. Instruct your players to hop to their left about 2 or 3 feet, then hold the landing for 2 seconds. They must then hop to the right and hold before hopping to the left again. Have players hop 10 times in each set. As your players learn to land with stability, tell them increase the hop distance.
