Basketball drills are essential for helping players to develop the skills they will need in order to perform their best at game time. Utilizing the whole court during drills is a way to simulate real-game action while still stressing specific skills and fundamentals. Full-court basketball drills can be done with just a few players or two full teams.

Three-Player Weave

The three-player weave helps players learn proper passing skills for fast-break and transition situations. Divide your team into three lines behind the baseline. The first player in each line steps to the baseline, the middle player with a ball. All players start running as the middle player passes the ball to the player on his right, then runs behind him as the player receiving the pass runs in front and to the middle. As the player now with the ball gets to the middle, he passes to the player on the left and runs behind him. The player on the left moves to the middle of the floor, and the pattern continues as players run down the floor in a weave motion, passing the ball among themselves without traveling or dribbling.

Full-Court Outlet Drill

The full-court outlet drill helps players practice getting out in transition and moving up the floor for an easy score. Divide players into two groups. Have one group stand on the baseline near the basket, while the other gathers on the sideline near the top of the 3-point line. The first player in the baseline group takes a ball and bounces it off the backboard, then passes to the first player at the 3-point line, who dribbles the ball full speed down the court toward the other basket. The baseline player, after passing the ball, runs the full length of the court and receives a bounce pass from the other player and completes a layup. The other player then rebounds the ball and passes it to her drill partner at the 3-point line to repeat the drill, this time going the other way down the court. Have each set of drill partners complete two trips down the floor for the drill.

Pepper-Runner Drill

Divide your players into three lines along the baseline. The player in the middle and the player on the right sprint up the floor, passing the ball back and forth without traveling or dribbling. The player on the left sprints up the floor in tandem with the other two players. When the players get to the middle of the lane, the middle player bounce passes the ball to the player on the left, who shoots a layup. The player on the right then moves to the middle to get the rebound, the player in the middle moves to the left and the player on the left moves to the right, and the players all repeat the drill in the same order down to the other end of the floor.
