More so than the women's game, men's volleyball features explosive power and speed. Yet all the athleticism in the world can't make up for poor technique and spotty teamwork. The following men's volleyball drills try to recreate game situations, allowing players to improve both their skills and communication.
Blocking
In this blocking drill, one blocker stands at the far left end of the net, while a second blocker stands at the far right end. The other players form a line in the middle of the court. Two coaches, one positioned in front of each blocker, stand on the other side of the net with a supply of balls. On the whistle, the first player in line runs to the net and then shuffles either left or right, according to the coach's direction, and joins the already positioned blocker in an attempted block. The drill stresses proper footwork and agility, with the moving player focused on getting close enough to his teammate before jumping to eliminate any potential gaps in the block.
Bucket Ball
In this hitting drill, position a passer, setter and two hitters on one side of the net. A server and two blockers position on the other side, with a ball cart placed anywhere in the field of play. The drill begins with the server lofting an easy ball over to the passer, who moves the ball to the setter charging the net. The setter sets up either the left or right hitter, who then tries to kill the ball into the ball cart. Hitters can either compete against each other or in groups of two to try and get the most balls in the cart.
Corner Kill
To work on serve accuracy, place a cone in each corner of the back zone. Divide into two teams. The teams take turns serving, attempting to knock over each cone. The first team to topple all four cones wins. Learning to focus on serving into the corners will lead to service points and easy return sets.
Pass and Weave
This drill focuses on passing and foot movement. Place three balls in a line across the width of the court. Three passers set up a few feet away, each with a ball. The other players form a line off court and wait to run the drill. On the whistle, the first player assumes a ready position and receives and returns a pass. The player then shuffles and weaves in front of the first ball to get in position to take the second pass. After returning the pass, the player shuffles and weaves behind the second ball to get to the next position. The player receives and returns the third pass, shuffles in front of the third ball and then sprints back to the waiting line.
