Going to Las Vegas and never leaving the Strip is like eating an ice cream sundae without the toppings. While you still enjoy it, you're missing out on the total package. The Strip is right in the heart of Vegas and packed full of casinos, hotels, restaurants and other attractions. When you get away from the Strip, you open yourself up to more experiences and adventures that get your heart pounding and your feet moving. You won't have to worry about feeling bored or straying from your otherwise healthy lifestyle, as long as you take part in some activities away from the Strip.
Adventure Sports
Whether you live in Vegas, are visiting for the first time or are a seasoned visitor, you can still partake in adventure sports. You're close to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which has its own racing school. Ride around the track with one of the instructors or take one of the larger packages and drive yourself around the track. Vegas also offers white-water rafting, skydiving and bungee jumping.
Tours
Take a short drive from the heart of Las Vegas to tour one of the top destinations in the area. You're not far from the Hoover Dam, which offers tours of the facilities and show visitors an inside view of the Dam. The Grand Canyon is another popular tourist destination. Take a donkey ride, hike the area surrounding the Canyon or even just relax with a healthy picnic lunch and enjoy the sites. Helicopter tours of Las Vegas are also available, and a few places even offer tours of the surrounding desert by Hummer or ATV.
Hiking
Las Vegas has several areas suitable for hiking, including the Red Rock Canyon. The trails in this area are suitable for beginners, meaning you can bring the whole family. Mt. Charleston and Lake Mead also offer hiking trails. Hiking trails vary, depending on where you pick up the trail and how much experience you have. Some of the trails in the Vegas area take several days to complete, and others are finished in just a few hours.
Biking
Bring your bike to Vegas or rent one at one of the local shops. You won't find many areas for biking in the heart of Las Vegas, but many exist away from the Strip. Both paved trails and more rugged trails exist. You'll also find mountain biking trails. It's nearly impossible to navigate the Strip by bicycle, but get a few miles away and the land seems to open up.
Golf
Las Vegas is home to many golf courses, but if you want to get away from the Strip, visit nearby Summerlin. This planned community is only minutes away and has nine golf courses. Of those courses, two are operated and maintained by the PGA Tour. You'll find both private and public courses scattered around the city, and some hotels even offer discounted rates at local courses.
