A good beauty regimen doesn't have to take a lot of effort, but it can have a big effect on how you look and how you feel. After all, magazines and cosmetic companies build entire brands around your desire to look your best. With all the advice and products to choose from, it can be difficult to find the best way to let your natural beauty shine. Here are some of the essentials for healthy skin and hair.

Skin Tips

The Mayo Clinic has published a list of tips for healthy skin. According to Mayo Clinic staff, good skin care "can help delay the natural aging process and prevent many skin problems." This means protecting your delicate facial skin from the sun; stopping smoking; eating well; avoiding stress; using gentle cleansers and moisturizers; and avoiding hot water, rough or dull shavers and rubbing your skin dry. Treating your skin like the sensitive organ it is will help it stay healthy and look better for years to come.

Acne Advice

Teenagers in particular experience acne, but it affects adult skin too. TeensHealth's guide to skincare recommends that you keep your skin clean and avoid touching it. Don't pop pimples, as they can become inflamed and even create scars. Wear noncomedogenic makeup, which is less likely to cause acne, and remove it before you go to bed. Wash your skin twice a day at most and don't scrub. For recurring acne, try a lotion containing benzoyl peroxide or see a dermatologist for a consultation.

Hair Tips

In June 2010, Self magazine published an article addressing their readers' biggest "hair gripes." The four biggest hair complaints were messy morning hair; boring style; greasy locks; and dryness and breakage. To fix messy hair, Self advises, just add water to reactivate your styling products. If you're bored with your style, try tying it up differently or blow-drying it. Use a dry shampoo spray to soak up excess hair oil and skip conditioner on oily hair. For dry hair, try an oil-based serum, skip daily shampooing, and avoid blow-dryers and flatirons.

Nutrition and Beauty

As they say, beauty comes from within. According to a recent article in Elle, a good diet can improve the condition of your skin and hair. Eat antioxidant-rich berries, omega 3 packed salmon and sunflower seeds for vitamin E. Whole grains can provide zinc and selenium, which guard skin from damage and can help stop acne. Citrus fruits add vitamin C, helping to build collagen for firmness and elasticity. Spinach is a source of zinc, selenium and vitamins C, E and A, boosting the production of new cells while improving your hair and skin's overall condition.
