High blood sugar causes inflammation in the body's tissues and leads to other medical conditions, according to the American Diabetes Association. High blood sugar can be a precursor to diabetes. There are numerous natural ways to lower blood sugar, including eating right and exercising regularly.

Bay Leaves

Bay leaves lower blood sugar, according to research reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Service. The research showed a 20 to 26 percent reduction of blood sugar levels in study participants after 10 days of ingesting 1 to 3 g of bay leaves. The recommended dose is the powder from two dried leaves. This can be ingested in capsules or stirred into warm water and drunk as a tea.

Cinnamon

The bark of the cinnamomum bumanni tree has been shown to lower blood sugar. A chemical compound in cinnamon--known as MHCP--improves the absorption of insulin, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center; 1 to 6 g a day is the dosage they suggest.

Protein

Protein helps balance blood glucose, or sugar, levels. To stabilize blood sugar, the University of Maryland Medical Center advises eating protein foods with every meal. Foods high in protein include meat and soy products.

Fiber

Fiber lowers blood sugar and has been shown to prevent diabetes, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. Fiber is a component of whole grains and beans, among many other foods--leafy vegetables are high in fiber, as are apples and potatoes. Fiber also helps lower cholesterol.

Exercise

The American Diabetes Association recommends staying active, as exercise quickly removes glucose from the bloodstream. They suggest beginning a simple routine that is easy to maintain.
