Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, causes many individuals to feel blue and lethargic during the winter months, says Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health. Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you have to be stuck feeling down. Grab a friend and beat the winter blues together with a few simple solutions.
Get Some Sun
According to Medline Plus, seasonal affective disorder may be caused by a lack of sunlight exposure during the cold winter months. Take advantage of sunny days by getting outside. Bundle up and go for a walk, or plan a weekend getaway to a warmer location for a healthy dose of light.
Dr. Oz also suggests installing compact fluorescent bulbs in your home. You'll save energy while elevating the levels of depression-inhibiting melatonin in your brain.
Enjoy a Winter Sport
Find a winter sport you enjoy, and before you know it, you'll be looking forward to the cold weather. Whether it's skiing, skating or snowshoeing, aerobic exercise boosts your endorphins to lift your mood, says U.S. News & World Report Health.
Spice Up Your Food
While the temptation to binge on fattening holiday foods is greater in the winter, make sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet full of nutrient-rich foods to improve your mood. Eating healthy doesn't have to taste bland. Adding chili peppers to your food gives you a dose of capsaicin, a chemical thought to improve energy levels and circulation, says Dr. Oz.
Go Swimming
Something about the smell of chlorine is reminiscent of warm summer days. Even though it may be too cold to laze at the beach or outdoor pool, you can still get your fill of this summertime activity at a local indoor aquatics center. Get in some mood-lifting exercise, and forget about the snow on the ground.
Volunteer
The holidays are a time of giving, and giving back to the community takes the focus off your mood as you focus on helping others. Spend some time serving at a soup kitchen, organizing a holiday toy drive or reading to kids at a nearby school. Recruit a friend or loved one to join you, and head out for a cup of coffee and a chat afterward.
