Aikido, which originated in Japan, differs from other martial arts. Fighting styles like karate and taekwondo use hard, linear techniques to defeat opponents. These techniques typically include blocks, punches and kicks. Aikido, however, takes a different approach. Aikido uses many circular movements and joint locks to redirect an opponent’s energy. This approach can help you defend against attackers on the street.

Wrist Grab

If an attacker moves toward you and grabs you by the wrist, use his momentum against him. As the attacker grabs your left wrist with his right hand, turn your body to the right and let your left arm continue to lead him in the same direction. Quickly change his direction and take him off balance by pivoting to your left. Grab his right wrist with your left hand as you turn your body. Chop down on the bend in the attacker’s arm with your right hand. Force the attacker to the ground.

Lapel Grab

Aikido teaches many defenses against lapel grabs. If an attacker grabs you by the lapel and shoves you backward, then use that energy to your advantage. If he grabs with his left hand, then immediately grab his hand with your right hand. Step back with your right leg to continue his forward motion and take him off balance. Chop down on the bend in his arm with your left hand and take him to the ground.

Front Choke

In this scenario, the attacker tries to grab you around the neck. Before the attacker has a chance to get a tight grip on your throat, grab his right hand with your left hand. At the same time, deliver a punch to his solar plexus with your right hand. Move his right hand down to your waist level and grab his hand with your right hand. Place both of your thumbs on the back of his hand and bend his wrist. Turn his hand counterclockwise and quickly pivot your hips to the left. Send the attacker to the ground when you pivot.

Back Choke

Aikido also can help you deal with chokes from behind. To escape from this grab, immediately strike backward at the attacker’s groin with your right hand. Then, reach across the front of your body with your right hand and grab his left hand. As you grasp his hand, spin around so that you wind up standing side-by-side with the attacker. You both should be facing the same direction. Put both of your thumbs on the back of his left hand. Pivot 180 degrees to your right and use the attacker’s wrist to take him to the ground.
