Parks
Whether your interest is swimming, playing sports or just enjoying nature, you're sure to find it at one of Seattle's more than 400 parks. At 534 acres, Discovery Park is the largest city-operated park in Seattle. The park offers bird-watching areas and walking trails through forest, meadow and wetlands environments. You can also hang out at the park's beaches or hit a few balls on its tennis courts.
Water Activities
Formed 50,000 years ago by the Vashon Glacial Ice Sheet, Green Lake is a popular recreational area that includes bike paths, soccer fields and fishing areas. The Green Lake Small Craft Center hosts three major regattas every year. If you're into boating, consider signing up for one of the center's classes in rowing, canoeing, kayaking or sailing. Both adults and children can participate in most classes.
Biking
An estimated 4,000 to 8,000 Seattle residents commute by bicycle every day, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation. The city has more than 120 miles of bike lanes on streets and many more miles of bike paths in area parks. Riding through popular Seattle neighborhoods such as Capitol Hill, Queen Anne and Fremont on two wheels is a great way to experience the city. You can also bike to the Space Needle and Experience Music Project downtown.
Shopping
Seattle residents have a great resource for healthy food in Pike Place. One of the most famous food markets in the country, Pike Place has served Seattle residents since 1907. You can buy locally grown fruits and vegetables directly from farmers. Tourists and locals alike head to the market for its selection of fresh fish from nearby rivers and the ocean. Pike Place Market also has a number of restaurants and retail shopping outlets.
Team Sports
The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department operates seasonal leagues in sports ranging from flag football to volleyball. Pretend you're back in gym class by joining the coed adult dodgeball or kickball league. The department also offers youth sports camps in softball, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee, and a free summer youth basketball camp.
