New York City is always buzzing with activity. The city is well-known for its shopping opportunities, Broadway shows, and restaurants. But there is plenty more to see and do, even for the seasoned traveler.
Shopping
New York City offers a plethora of shopping experiences. Take in a stroll through Times Square in Manhattan and stop in the Hershey store, or the CBS store, spanning the network's 50-year history. Visit one of the city's major department stores, like Macy's at Herald Square or Bloomingdales on 59th Street. Head downtown to the J & R electronics megamart, and on the way explore the bohemian shops and stands along St. Mark's Place in the East Village. Take the L train over to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and browse the second-hand stop and vintage clothing boutiques.
Sightseeing
Whether or not you've been to New York City before, no doubt you'll want to hit some of the hot spots around town. If you're curious about television, take a tour of the NBC Studios and get an inside look at how some of your favorite shows are produced, like The Today Show and the NBC Nightly News. You might also head out to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, to learn about the creative process behind film and television and view thousands of historical artifacts. Be sure to spend time amid the many bright theatrical lights of Broadway: visit the TKTS discount ticket booths (Times Square, South Street Seaport, and Downtown Brooklyn) for discounts of up to 50 percent on theater tickets for that day. Times Square is also home to the famed ball-drop on New Year's Eve. Visit Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum on 42nd Street. Or take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, where you can walk up the 171 steps to the statue's crown and get a great view of the city and surrounding area.
Dining
New York City offers a plethora of different types of food. Visit Chinatown, Little India or Little Italy in Manhattan. Try some of Soho's exotic eateries. Or trek up to the Bronx to enjoy food from Ghana, or to Flushing Queens for a Dim Sum, or to Sunset Park in Brooklyn for some Malaysian or Vietnamese food. Wherever you go within the five boroughs, you'll be sure to find a restaurant that will please your palate.
Parks and Recreation
Take a stroll in the city's most well-known green space: Central Park. Enter at 59th Street and walk through the park's many trails. Ride a horse-drawn carriage or spend a few hours at the Central Park Zoo, with its 130 different species of mammals, from polar bears to goats. During the winter, you might go ice skating on Wollman Rink. Central Park is also home to the famed Strawberry Fields, where you can get a glimpse of the Imagine mosaic. Or head down to Greenwich Village and visit Washington Square Park with its famous arch, as well as the large fountain. Head out to the Queens Botanical Garden, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden or the Staten Island Botanical Garden (housing a World Trade Center Educational Tribute).
Museums and Zoos
View the large collection of dinosaur fossils and learn about our ancestors at the Museum of National History. Or take in a show about how stars are born at the Hayden Planetarium, located inside the museum. For a different perspective on history, visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage, which pays tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. On everyone's to-do list in New York City should be a day at the Bronx Zoo, with over 600 species of animals, including exotic animals, reptiles, mammals and insects. And the next day, check out an African savannah at the Staten Island Zoo, which also boasts an aquarium, a tropical forest, pony rides, a red panda exhibit, and a barn full of Clydesdale horses.
