Skateboarding can be fun to both watch and perform. Tricks are an essential part of the skateboarding experience. Skateboarders seek out the ability to jump, twist and manipulate a skateboard quickly. You can perform many of these tricks once you learn the basic maneuvers. Many of these tricks also develop muscle strength, balance and coordination.
Ollie
The ollie is among the most basic tricks a skateboarder can learn. It is a skateboard jump with no extra frills. You start an ollie by bending your knees for a jump. Just before the jump, slam your rear foot on the tail while simultaneously sliding your front foot forward along the board without ever losing contact with the board.
Backside 180
The backside 180 is one of many tricks that requires a mastery of the ollie before learning. The backside 180 resembles an ollie, but you land with your body and board at a complete 180-degree turn from where you started. Begin the ollie with a slight twist of the shoulders while you bend your knees. After jumping, unwind your shoulders and your lower body will follow the twist.
Manual
A skateboard "manual" is a long ride on the back pair of wheels only. Even though you never leave the ground, improper balance can cause the board to shoot forward away from you as you swiftly fall back on your head. Lean your upper body toward the front of the board while pressing down on the board's tail.
End-Over
The "end-over" is a trick that shifts the weight and balance of the skateboard from its front to its back while rotating 180 degrees. The end-over begins like a manual, but with pressure on the front of the board. Once half the board is tilted up, turn the board and then repeat the procedure indefinitely.
Railstand
The "railstand" is a trick in which you balance on the edge of the skateboard while the is resting on its side with the wheels perpendicular to the ground. Peform a small jump on either side of the board to start the lengthwise rotation. Lift the foot opposite the jump and rest it on the skateboard's side. Immediately put your jump foot on the side as well.
Kickflip
The "kickflip" is a 360-degree lengthwise rotation of a skateboard during a small jump. Unlike the railstand, which also creates a similar rotation, you don't start the kickflip from a jump on the board's side. Rather, use your toes on one foot to grasp the underside of the board and pull up to start the flip.
Frontside 50 50
The "frontside 50 50" uses a rail or curb. The trick begins with an ollie to jump up on the rail at a diagonal angle. The front and back wheels straddle the rail while you balance and slide down or across it. Land when you reach the end of the rail with your knees bent to absorb the drop down from the rail.
