It's not uncommon for acne to leave behind a spot of discoloration. Many people assume these to be scars, but fortunately they are not. They will fade over time on their own, but they can take a year or more to heal. According to the Derma Network, damaged skin tissues left behind post inflammation can result in three different types of discoloration: erythema, which are pink or purplish spots; hyperpigmentation, which is brown or black spots; or hypopigmentation, or white spots. Speeding up healing of this discoloration is possible, however, with appropriate treatment.
Sunscreen
One of the most important steps stressed by Skincare Physicians is the use of sunscreen daily. When you are exposed to the sun's rays, not only will the sun darken your skin, but it will darken your acne discoloration as well. This will require even more time for scars to fade. Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30 about 20 minutes before going outside. To prevent further acne breakouts, use non-greasy, oil-free sunscreen.
Bleaching Creams
Bleaching creams are available in both over-the-counter and prescription strengths. The primary ingredient in OTC products is hydroquinone. Look for products that contain 2 percent hydroquinone, which is the maximum amount allowed in OTC bleaching creams.. A dermatologist, however, can prescribe up to 4 percent hydroquinone.
Other Skin Lighteners
Other skin lighteners available by prescription may contain a combination of hydroquinone, a form of cortisone and tretinoin, which is a derivative of vitamin A. Still other skin lightening medications are tazarotene, adapalene and azelaic acid.
Light Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can be used to remove acne discoloration, which resides within the top layers of skin. The type of acid used depends on the depth of peel needed to fade imperfections. After the acid is applied, your skin peels off, revealing new skin underneath. Multiple treatments may be required.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion works using the same concept as a chemical peel, only rotating aluminum oxide crystals are used to slough off the top layers of skin. This process is pain free and requires no downtime for recovery. As with chemical peels, multiple treatments may be required.
