According to Medline Plus, dry hair is a common symptom of undernourished hair, improper hair care. A poor diet and overuse of blow driers and harsh styling products can strip the hair of vital oils. However, there are numerous natural treatments that can help your hair regain its essential moisture. These remedies have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for effectiveness, so you should contact your doctor before trying any home remedies on yourself.
Change the Way You Shampoo
According to Thomas Goodman, Jr., M.D., a dermatologist from Memphis, Tennessee, and assistant professor at the University Of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, shampooing your hair too much can strip the protective oils from your hair, leaving it dry and damaged. Goodman recommends not washing your hair every day, or at the very least, using a mild shampoo labeled for dry and damaged hair if you must wash your hair every day due to exercise or a very active lifestyle.
Olive Oil
According to Julie Gabriel, author of "The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup, and Fragrances, " using olive oil in your hair can help dry hair regain essential moisture after it has become dried out. To use olive oil in your hair, gently massage 1/4 cup into your scalp and the roots of your hair. Wrap a towel around your head to keep the olive oil from getting on your clothes and face. Leave the olive oil in your hair for 60 minutes before rinsing with cool water and shampooing with a gentle shampoo. Let your hair dry naturally without using a towel or hair dryer. Olive oil can be applied to the hair daily as long as no irritation occurs.
Beer
Beer is a common home remedy for dry hair, according to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: The Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Foods, and Home Remedies since 1939." To use beer in your hair, pour 6 oz. of natural, organic beer into a spray bottle. Mist the hair with beer, gently combing the liquid through the hair follicles and onto the scalp. Continue spraying while combing the hair until all of the beer is gone. Wrap a towel around your head and leave the beer in your hair for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with cool water and shampoo gently with a mild shampoo to remove the sugars. Let your hair dry naturally without drying after use. Beer can be used daily as long as it does not irritate your skin or scalp. Use organic beer when possible, as traces of chemicals used to treat wheat, grain and hops are not particularly good for your hair, and may be less effective than beer made without chemically-treated ingredients.
