The burning feeling of acid reflux, also called heartburn, causes a painful sensation in upper chest and throat. A muscle valve in the esophagus that does not function properly causes the reaction. Normally, the valve opens when food goes into the stomach and closes to prevent stomach acid from backing up. When it does not close, acid reflux results. Some people have heartburn once in a while. Others experience it more often and may experience gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). No matter which kind you have, immediate relief from acid reflux is a welcome remedy.

Step 1

Consume antacids to bring quick relief for acid reflux. Antacids reduce the effect of acid coming up from the stomach, Family Doctor explains. It's important to chew tablets thoroughly before swallowing to provide faster aid for heartburn symptoms. Antacids are available over the counter in tablet and liquid form. Liquids can work just as fast, but small packs of antacids are easier to carry around in case of sudden acid reflux attacks.

Step 2

Chew gum or suck on hard candy to stimulate production of saliva, Health911 advises. Saliva helps neutralize stomach acid and keeps the digestive juices from coming back up to stop further episodes of heartburn.

Step 3

Eat a banana, which has a natural antacid effect, according to Health911. Ground dry banana may also work.

Step 4

Sip a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, which has been a long-time remedy for acid reflux. However, some people say the acidic content of apple cider vinegar may increase the problem; others say it provides relief. For those who want to try it out, the vinegar burns for a second when going down the throat but coats the throat to relieve heartburn.

Step 5

Keep herbal preparations handy to use in case heartburn strikes. A few drops of clove oil in a glass of water may relieve acid reflux when sipped slowly. Taking a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root may relieve acid reflux. Chamomile tea may relieve irritation to the esophagus to stop heartburn. For a home remedy, simmer 1 tsp of licorice root in 1¼ cups of water in a covered pot for 10 minutes. Add 2 tsp of dried chamomile, cover and steep for 10 minutes, and then strain.

Tips and Warnings

  • Papaya chewable tablets, available in health stores, may relieve acid reflux, Homemade Medicine suggests. If nothing else is available, try a glass of water. It may work for mild cases of heartburn.
  • Smoking increases acid reflux symptoms because it inhibits the production of saliva.
