There are numerous home remedies for longer hair growth that come from a variety of different cultures and areas. While many claim that these home remedies work to help you grow your hair longer, this evidence is not supported by the Food and Drug Administration, so it is important that you consult your doctor before trying any home remedy for longer hair growth, particularly if it involves changing your diet and what you put in your body.
Sunflower Oil and Lime Juice
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a combination of sunflower oil and lime juice is commonly used in Ayurvedic beauty care to help hair grow faster, and it is commonly recommended to those losing their hair. To use sunflower oil and lime juice, combine 1/4 cup sunflower oil and 1/8 cup natural or freshly squeezed lime juice in a measuring cup or small bowl. Get your hair damp and gently massage the mixture into the scalp and roots of the hair in the shower. Leave the mixture in your hair for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Shampoo your hair with a gentle cleanser and condition as normal. This treatment can be done up to two times per day as long as the lime juice does not irritate your scalp.
Olive Oil and Yucca Root
A mixture of olive oil and yucca root is a common folk remedy for hair growth and to prevent hair loss. It has been used for many years in Ayurvedic medicine, according to Sachs. To use olive oil and yucca root for hair growth, mix 3 tbsp. olive oil with a 2-inch piece of yucca root in a blender and process until the mixture is consistently thick. Apply the mixture to the scalp and roots of the hair with a towel around your shoulders or in the bathtub or shower. Leave the mixture in your hair for 30 minutes before rinsing the scalp with cool water. Cleanse the hair with a gentle shampoo before using your regular conditioner. Let your hair dry naturally without using a towel or hair dryer. This treatment can be done daily as long as no irritation occurs.
Eat More Protein
According to Health Scout, protein is an important part of healthy hair growth as hair is made of a protein called keratin. Adding more protein to your diet can help speed up the hair growth process. Protein-rich foods include lean meats, eggs, fish, soybeans, nuts and numerous leafy green vegetables like broccoli and Swiss chard. Protein supplements are also widely available if you are unable to add more protein to your diet because of allergies, health or personal concerns. Of course, protein should only be one portion of your diet, and healthy hair requires a balanced diet that is rich in other minerals and nutrients as well.
