The thin skin around around your eyes and mouth is often the first spot on your face to show the signs of age. Those fine lines and wrinkles appear when the stores of collagen beneath your skin shrink, causing cracks and crevices that show up as wrinkles on the surface of the skin. Cosmetic, non-invasive and surgical methods minimize the appearance of facial lines.

Cosmetic Treatments

For many people, cosmetic treatments are the first line of defense against facial lines. For everyday, use light-reflecting moisturizers to make wrinkles less noticeable, suggests Susan Giordano, a professional makeup artist who has worked on skin-care ads for Olay and Avon, in "Allure" magazine. Mathew Nigara, a professional makeup artist who has worked on ads for Nars skin care, recommends in "Allure" magazine applying a rich moisturizing cream, skin brightener or petroleum-based cream to the eyelids, cheekbones and bridge of the nose to reflect light there, making wrinkles less noticeable.

Non-Invasive Treatments

Getting weekly infrared light treatments can stimulate collagen production, making wrinkles temporarily vanish, says Sonya Dakar, a Beverly Hills-based aesthetician, in "Allure" magazine. Dakar says chemical peels and laser treatments can deliver the same effects, but the risk of skin irritation with those methods is higher than with infrared light. Injectable fillers--popular brand names include Botox, Radiesse, Juvéderm, Restylane and Evolence--use gel-like compounds to re-inflate areas with low collagen, smoothing out wrinkles for six to nine months, says Dr. Doris Day, M.D., dermatologist and author of the book "Forget the Facelift: Turn Back the Clock with a Revolutionary Program for Ageless Skin," in "Elle" magazine.

Surgical Treatments

For permanent line removal or tightened skin, plastic surgery may be the best option, Dr. William Boss, M.D., a plastic surgeon, says in "Elle" magazine. In a typical facelift, a surgeon makes an incision behind the hairline, then tightens muscles, and trims skin and fat to smooth away wrinkles, explains "More" magazine. The typical recovery time for a face lift is one to two weeks.
