There are many skin care products available, and finding the most effective ones depends on your skin's particular needs. If you have acne, concerns about aging, dark spots or extreme dryness, it's easy to find serums and spot treatments, but it can be harder to narrow down your everyday skin care essentials. Choosing the most effective products to form the basis of your daily skin care routine is the key to getting the results you want.
Cleanser
Washing your face twice a day is the basis of a good skin care routine, which makes a good cleanser essential. Renee Rouleau, an esthetician in Dallas, says in Marie Claire magazine that one good way to find your perfect cleanser is to try it out. If a cleanser leaves your skin feeling dry and tight, it's too harsh for you and you should switch to a gentler formula. If you have specific skin issues, consider a cleanser that addresses those issues, recommends Andrea Pomerantz, a contributing beauty editor at Glamour magazine on CBS's "The Saturday Early Show." If acne is an issue, look for a cleanser that unclogs pores in addition to cleaning; Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle, Anti-Blemish Cleanser and SK-II Facial Cleanser are both good options, says Pomerantz.
Sunscreen
The best way to fight the wrinkles and dark spots that show up as initial signs of aging is to stop them from making an appearance in the first place, and sunscreen can help you do just that. To protect your skin, More magazine recommends choosing a hydrating sunscreen that can do double duty as a moisturizer and sunscreen during the day; L'Oreal Advanced RevitaLift SPF 15 Day Lotion is a good option, according to More. If your skin tends to be oily, Pomerantz recommends choosing oil-free sunscreen pads instead of traditional sunscreen. She says Completely Bare Solar Shield SPF 30 Pads and Dermalogica SPF 15 Pads are both good choices for oilier skin.
Moisturizer
Your skin needs moisturizer to prevent dry patches and dullness, and you may need to increase the intensity of your moisturizer as you age, says Pomerantz. For optimum results, Rouleau recommends in Marie Claire that you steer clear of moisturizers that contain synthetic fragrances; she says those ingredients are the number-one cause of allergic reactions, along with mineral oils, which can increase redness and make it hard for your skin to breathe. Pomerantz recommends Nivea Simply Glowing or Dove Sensitive Skin Cream as good options for moisturizers.
