It is natural to experience some hair thinning or hair loss during the aging process. According to "The Mayo Clinic Guide to Self Care," edited by Philip T. Hagen, M.D., normal daily hair loss can be up to 50 to 100 strands. There are a variety of oils reputed for their ability to promote hair growth and aid in preventing further thinning.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is one available option for promoting hair growth. Olive oil is relatively inexpensive and is readily available at most supermarkets. According to tarunaoils.com, olive oil is very nourishing for dry hair and may promote hair growth.
To promote hair growth and give dry hair an extra boost, add a scented essential oil to the olive oil. According to "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," by Roberta Wilson, rosemary, lavender, cedarwood, clary sage and chamomile oil are beneficial in the treatment of dry hair.
Wash, rinse and towel-dry hair. To create the mixture, add 4 to 8 drops of the chosen essential oil per tablespoon of olive oil. Massage the mixture into the hair and scalp, leave on for 30 minutes and rinse.

Rosemary and Clary Sage Oils

Use rosemary and clary sage oils together to promote hair growth. According to tarunaoils.com, these two oils work well together to promote hair growth. Boil rosemary and clary sage, along with nettle, burdock and peach leaf, strain and use the liquid as a hair rinse.
"Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty" suggests mixing 4 drops of clary sage oil, 4 drops of rosemary oil, 2 drops of cedarwood oil and 2 drops of ylang ylang oil with 1 oz. of jojoba oil to create an essential oil formula for hair growth. Massage this formula into your scalp daily and leave on for 30 minutes.

Jojoba Oil

According to "The Aromatherapy Bible," by Gill Farrer-Halls, jojoba oil is deeply penetrating, nourishing to the hair and scalp, and is safe for use on all skin types. It is a popular base oil in the practice of aromatherapy, and any essential oil can be added to it to enhance its benefits.
Tarunaoils.com recommends massaging jojoba oil into the hair and scalp and leaving on for 30 minutes. Add 8 to 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to 1 oz. of jojoba oil to create a more fragrant mixture. Popular essential oils that are also reputed to promote hair growth can be used in this mixture, including lavender, peppermint and tea tree oils.
Mix 8 to 10 oz. with clary sage oil and with 1 oz. of jojoba oil and massage into the roots to stimulate hair growth.
