Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils to promote healing and feelings of well-being in the body, is helpful in the treatment of acne. Acne mostly affects the face and neck and the back and shoulders, and results when there is overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands where bacteria can then accumulate, causing a blockage in the hair follicle. The result is pimples.

Contributory Factors to Acne

According to Acne.org: "The cause of pimples is unknown. The process by which a pimple develops is highly intricate. We do not fully understand why this process takes place in one sebaceous gland versus another."
Acne.org also goes on to state there may be a number of factors contributing to the cause. These include evolutionary biology and hormonal changes such as those that take place during puberty, menopause and during the menstrual cycle. Lack of exercise, stress and anxiety may also exacerbate the condition. Another factor for some people may be poor diet--a high intake of fatty foods which may lead to a build up of excess fat in the bloodstream.

Cleanliness

One of the most important factors in the treatment and prevention of acne is good hygiene. The affected area should always be kept clean and dry, and you should avoid picking or squeezing the pimples as this increases the risk of infection.

Juniper Berry

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils states that the antiseptic and astringent properties of the essential oil juniper berry (Latin name Juniperus communis) are very helpful when treating acne. It enhances the healing of wounds and the formation of scar tissue, helping to clear the pimples more effectively. Juniper berry also boosts circulation, which increases the blood flow to the skin, oxygenating it, flushing away toxins, and promoting healing.
However, juniper berry should not be used during pregnancy, or by anyone with a kidney problem.

Tea Tree

Tea Tree (Latin name Melaleuca alternifolia) is a powerful antiseptic and antibacterial oil which helps to clear infections that have arisen in an area of acne. It can be applied undiluted to a pimple to help dry it out, though care should be taken not to overuse it.
Says Aromatherapies.net: "Tea tree can eliminate acne effectively without any side effects that other prescription drugs may cause."

Camomile

Roman camomile (Latin name Chamaemelum nobile) is particularly effective for treating the most extreme form of acne, when there are boils. The oil can be applied undiluted to the affected area, or four drops can be added to water when bathing.

Combining the Oils

The three oils mentioned above, tea tree, camomile and juniper can be blended with a carrier oil to help ease the symptoms of acne. Combine one drop each of tea tree and chamomile, and four drops of juniper berry in 20ml of jojoba oil. Apply gently to the affected area and leave for three minutes before gently removing with cold water.
