A little bit of frizz or fly-away hair is inevitable, especially during hot summer months; heat and humidity are two of the primary frizz-causing factors. But you don't have to spend dozens of dollars to battle the frizz. All you need to do to keep your hair sleek is avoid common causes of frizz, such as hair-damaging chemical treatments, and follow a few simple tips.

Spray and Comb

Spray rose water or a leave-in conditioner on your comb, then comb gently through your hair. The rose water is a mild frizz-controlling conditioner for fine hair. A leave-in conditioner keeps humidity from penetrating your hair and provoking fly-away frizz. If you don't have rose water handy, try thinning a bit of vegetable glycerin with water and combing it through your hair instead.

Neglect...Sort Of

Not washing your hair every day may seem like neglect, but too-frequent washing can strip your hair's natural oils away, leaving you with a head full of frizz. Try washing every other day, instead.

Rinse

Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for almost every condition, including frizzy hair. If you have apple cider vinegar on hand already, you've nothing to lose by rinsing your hair with one part apple cider vinegar and one part water just before you get out of the shower.

Blow Dry

Blow-drying can help to defrizz your hair, but only if you do it right. Use a low-heat setting and keep both the dryer and your hair moving constantly. Use a round, vented brush to help you present one three-inch section of your hair to the blow dryer at a time.

Squeeze

If you'd rather do without the blow dryer, avoid the temptation to dry your hair by rubbing your head vigorously with a towel; this can damage your hair, causing it to frizz. Instead, wrap an old t-shirt around your hair and apply gentle hand pressure to squeeze out excess water.

Trim

Split ends spawn frizz. Getting a trim every eight to 10 weeks won't just make your hair look tidy, it'll also reduce the frizz factor so that you always look sleek.

Mask

Use a deep-conditioning hair mask to keep your hair sleek. Once a week, mash half a ripe avocado in a small bowl. Mix the avocado paste with a quarter cup coconut milk. Comb the resulting gel through clean hair, leave in for up to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
