Doing drills before a softball game enables a player to warm up and get play. A player should do drills that will allow her to field the ball well, get ready to run the bases and hit the ball to all fields.
Infield Practice
Infielders must be prepared to make all plays and not make errors. Taking infield practice enables players to prepare for games. During infield practice, hit each infielder three ground balls. On the first ground ball the infielder will throw to first base to record an out. On the second ground ball, the infielder will throw to second as if getting the first out in a double play. On the third grounder, the infielder will throw the ball to the catcher at home plate.
Batting Practice
In a game in which pitchers throw the ball at 70 miles per hour along with drops, risers, curves and change ups, batters must take advantage of scoring opportunities when the pitcher leaves a hittable pitch over the plate. Good hitters know they don't have to pull every pitch. Instead, they hit the ball to all fields. In batting practice, practice hitting inside pitches to left field--right-handed hitters--and pitches up the middle to center field. Hit the outside pitches to right field.
Base Running
Prior to a game, warm up and prepare to run the bases. Start by stealing second base and making sure you slide in feet first since head first slides are not legal in softball. Take a lead off second, run to third and continue to home. The key is to cut the corner of third and take the fastest route possible. Hit
the inside corner of third. Slide into home.
