Indoor cycling is a group exercise class performed on specially designed stationary bikes. During class, the instructor guides you through various terrains that feature hills, straightaways, rocky paths and muddy roads. Turning a resistance knob that controls the tension of the bicycle's flywheel affects the difficulty of the pedal stroke, making these terrain simulations possible.

Multilevel

Because the rider adjusts the tension on the resistance knob, highly trained athletes can ride next to less-conditioned participants. As a beginner, you may find some of the more advanced sprints and standing drills too taxing, but you can easily sit and pedal during these moves and still get a strong workout.

Inspirational

The combination of music, visual imagery and group dynamics can make indoor cycling a fun and inspiring workout. While you may get bored exercising on your own and thus cut your workout short, in class you get caught up in the ride and keep going for the entire 40 to 60 minutes. The group atmosphere provides you with energy and motivation to work harder than you might on your own. Instructors provide tips on form and pace management that enhance your ability to sustain intense levels.

Adjustable

Indoor cycling bikes can be adjusted to fit your body frame. Ask your instructor to help you set up your bike on your first ride to ensure that your hips and knees are at proper pedaling angles. You can raise or lower the handle bars to accommodate back problems or to simulate outdoor riding conditions. Some complain about the slim, uncomfortable seats, but you can easily bring in your own padded seat or wear biking shorts to minimize discomfort.

Low Impact

Cycling is a low-impact activity, meaning that it is less stressful on the joints than activities like running or jumping rope. People with injuries or arthritis appreciate the chance to achieve a high-intensity cardio workout without aggravating their problems.

Gender Neutral

Many group exercise classes cater to women. Indoor cycling appeals to both genders equally. Pedaling comes easily to most people. There are only a few moves in indoor cycling--climbing, sprinting and standing--so you do not have to be intimidated by choreography.
