Manitou Springs, Colorado is a cute little village located about seven miles west of downtown Colorado Springs on U.S. 24, at the base of Pikes Peak. There are so many things to do in Manitou Springs, especially healthy and active sightseers, that visitors will want to plan to stay three or four nights to experience all of it.

Mountain Climbing

Manitou Springs is the gateway to Pikes Peak, one of the most visited mountaintops in the world. If you're up for an adventurous road trip, take U.S. 24 north out of town for approximately five miles to the Pikes Peak Toll Road. This steep, narrow, winding road hangs off the edge of the mountain in places, and it's a beautiful trip to the top (14,110 feet in altitude). Take warm clothes, because it's cold on top, and don't be surprised if you're asked to pull over on your trip back down the mountain to let your brakes cool.

All Aboard

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway claims to be the highest railway in the world. The train makes the trip up the mountain (and back down) eight times each day. A round trip takes just over three hours. You'll see wildlife and Rocky Mountain views that go on forever. It's best to call ahead for reservations, because this is an extremely popular ride.

Historic Lodging

Stay in the historic Cliff House Hotel, built in the 19th century and renovated in 1999. All rooms feature Victorian ambiance and decor. Among the 21st century amenities are heated toiled seats, spa or steam shower and wireless Internet access. If you prefer something a bit smaller, consider the 1892 Victoria's Keep Bed and Breakfast, where you can slow down, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, eat homemade cookies and feast on a gourmet breakfast.

History Lesson

The Cliff Dwellings Museum is one of those rare places that actually lets visitors interact with history. The Anasazi built their community under the protective cover of red sandstone cliffs more than 700 years ago. Today, guests have an opportunity to walk through the rooms and listen to whispers from the past, and enjoy living history presentations by American Indians.

Ready to Rock

The Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is only minutes from downtown Manitou Springs. This is one of the most spectacular city parks you're likely to encounter, a place where fantastic rock formations tower above the cool pines. Admission is free. Visitors hike and bike, take trail rides on horseback and enjoy guided geology and nature tours. The daring are welcome to climb the park's rocks.
