It could be argued that no city in the United States offers the cultural and environmental diversity of San Francisco. Fashionable shops, restaurants and world-renowned museums are located mere minutes from great hiking trails, scenic redwood forests and majestic beaches. The city's agreeable climate and closely knit layout provides a myriad of engaging activities for visitors of all budgets.

Walking Tour

A walking tour is a great way to not only get some exercise but to learn more about San Francisco's rich history and culture. Tours are free and run daily from a variety of locations throughout the city. San Francisco Walking Tours cover every inch of the city, from Golden Gate Park to North Beach, the Fort Mason Historic District and Sutro Heights.

Climbing

San Francisco's Touchstone Climbing and Fitness is home to four Bay-area indoor climbing facilities, which offer a fun and exciting way to stay active while learning new skills. A full day at the facility costs less than $30 and includes all necessary safety equipment, climbing lines and instruction by one of the facilities' climbing professionals. Basic courses include instruction in belay equipment, knot tying and basic top-rope climbing.

Bike Tours

Despite a few steep hills, San Francisco is one of the most biking friendly cities in the United States. Several bike rental and biking tour companies are located throughout the city. Blazing Saddles Bike Tours has five San Francisco locations, and offers visitors bike tours that visit numerous locations, from Fisherman's Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge. Bike rentals are as low as $20 per day.

Beaches

San Francisco's numerous beaches are great for walking, running, meditation and surfing. Ocean Beach is often inhabited by people partaking in all kinds of outdoor activities such as kite flying and sand-castle building. The beach at Aquatic Park in San Francisco Bay is great for swimming with its quiet waters and soft sand. There is also a paved walkway for bicycles.

Hiking

The San Francisco area is home to dozens of great hikes that are perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers. Hikes like those at Olompali State Historic Park venture approximately 3 miles and elevations of over 1,000 feet. But there are plenty of less-strenuous hikes for visitors who want to take in some of the city's scenic surroundings, including the Crissy Field trail out and back through the Presidido and the Contra Costa Canal trail which sprawls through area residences.
