Boston is, like most major cities, a great place to date because you can always find something to do without having to plan too far in advance. Whether you want to experience the classic dinner and a show or a romantic picnic in the park followed by an evening of stargazing, Boston has it all.

Parks

Take your date to one of Boston's many parks, find a nice little corner and have a picnic. The Boston Common takes up over 50 acres of the city's center and has a few ponds and a number of trees that make ideal picnic spots. The Christian Science Center, located downtown, has a vast reflecting pool which makes for a very romantic atmosphere, particularly in the late evening. Check out Harvard's Arnold Arboretum's wide variety of foliage and enjoy some birdwatching while you eat.

Harbor Tours

The Boston Harbor is home to a number of boats that take passengers on a variety of tours through the harbor. You can choose from whale watches during the day or dinner cruises in the evening. Many of the dinner cruises have live music and dance floors so you'll be treated to dinner, dancing, entertainment and spectacular views of the Boston's nighttime cityscape.

Theater

Boston's theater scene is vast and rich, including performances of Broadway musicals, amateur theater, Shakespeare, modern and contemporary plays. Most venues offer student rush seats, tickets with drastically reduced prices, to patrons carrying student identification and show up about an hour before curtain. If you can't get seats at one of the big venues, the Wang, the Colonial or the Opera House, try seeing one of Boston's semi-permanent shows, Blue Man Group or Shear Madness.

Shopping

Shopping in Boston can be a fun way to burn off a few calories from dinner and kill time between dinner and curtain time. Boston offers a wide variety of shopping centers throughout the downtown area ranging from affordable thrift and second-hand shops to upscale boutiques and major fashion houses. No matter where you choose to shop, Downtown Crossing, Newbury Street, Boylston Street, the Prudential Center or Copley Square, you'll always be within a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Theater District.

Museums

Museums are classic places to bring a date in Boston, and the city has no shortage of them. The Museum of Fine Arts, or MFA, has an outstanding collection of classics and international works and offers many special exhibits throughout the year. For a date on a budget, visit the Institute of Contemporary Art at Haymarket which boasts free admission and an ever-changing collection of works. If you happen to be dating on Wednesday, take your date to the Coit Observatory after dark for a free evening of stargazing.
