Things to Do in Cleveland for Free

Home to the Cleveland Browns, the city of Cleveland is located in northeastern Ohio. Known for its professional sports, culture and progressive medical care, Cleveland offers the health-conscious traveler plenty to do and see for free, while staying in shape, including art, music, outdoor recreation, festivals and sightseeing.

Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art, founded in 1913, features permanent collections, including African, Chinese, Medieval and Southeastern Art. The museum, whose works of art include pieces by Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso, offers art classes, films, lectures and gallery talks. Many of these events are free to the public.

Music

The Cleveland Institute of Music offers free concerts. The music school, founded in 1920, features more than 500 concerts around the Cleveland area annually. The concerts feature students, faculty, alumni and other artists. Most concerts are free, however, you must reserve advance passes for concerts where a large attendance is expected.

Outdoor Recreation

Active types can go swimming, picnicking and fishing at Edgewater State Park, which features a 900-foot swimming beach, boat ramps, picnic shelters, playground equipment and concession areas. Edgewater State Park offers free general admission and free parking. The park accepts pets on a leash and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Festivals

All through the year, Cleveland hosts a variety of free festivals, which include the Sparx City Hop and the North Coast Harbor Boating and Fishing Fest. According to the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the Sparx City Hop, "is a day-long event that connects and celebrates, the visual, culinary and performing arts of Cleveland's most central neighborhoods." The free trolley pass gets you into a whole day's worth of free activities, including galleries, sidewalk concerts and other special events. The North Coast Harbor Boating and Fishing Fest is located on Lake Erie and gives visitors an opportunity to gain knowledge about boats. The festival's activities are free and include boat trips, fishing and live entertainment.

Sightseeing

A trip to Cleveland would not be complete without some sightseeing in some of the city's most historic districts, including the Gateway, Warehouse and University Circle districts. Home to the Gund Arean and the Jacob's Field Ballpark, the Gateway district draws many sports and music fans. In the Warehouse district you will find a variety of upscale, restaurants and pubs sprawled along West 6th and 9th streets. The University Circle district attracts many art enthusiasts and history buffs due to its variety of museums, art galleries and cultural offerings. Walking around these districts is free and you may just have a good time.
