Simple volleyball drills can help players of all ages develop basic skills such as passing, setting and blocking. Once you demonstrate these drills in practice, your players can use them to practice on their own or with a friend. These mini volleyball drills do not require much equipment or many players.
Toss and Pass
Tell your players to pair up for this passing drill. Have partners stand a few steps away from each other. One player in each pair tosses the ball to her partner to pass. The second player practices passes for about five minutes before switching to toss the ball to her partner. Tell players to focus on maintaining an athletic stance with knees bent. They should hit the ball consistently with the same part of the forearms.
Wall Blocks
Have your players stand facing a wall and instruct them to jump as high as they can in front of the wall. They should slap their hands against the highest point they can reach to simulate the blocking motion. Except for this contact, the players should not touch the wall at all during the jump or descent. To help your players practice their approach toward the net, have them begin several steps away from the wall and then run to the wall to jump.
Continuous Setting
Players can do this setting drill on their own at home. Have players set the ball to themselves above their heads in a standing athletic position. As they continue to set, they slowly move into a sitting position on the floor, and then slowly lie down on the floor. Have the players continue to set while lying down before slowly standing up again.
Lateral Hops
This movement drill helps players to develop agility and practice a stable landing. Have players balance on the right foot, hop a few feet to the left, land on the left foot and hold the landing for a few seconds. They should keep their ankle stable. After a few seconds, have them hop to the right on their left foot and land on the right foot, once again holding the landing for a few seconds. Perform this drill in sets of 10 hops each.
