Herbal Remedies for Snoring

Snoring doesn't just cause problems for people who sleep within earshot of the loud, harsh breathing. It can also be a sign of respiratory illness or sleep apnea. Fortunately, there are some herbal remedies that might be helpful in treating this condition providing relief for the sufferer as well as friends and family members.

Jasmine

Essential oil made from the extract of the sweet-smelling jasmine flower is used as an herbal remedy for snoring that is caused by congestion. To use this remedy, try rubbing jasmine essential oil on the chest or nose before going to sleep at night. However, according to the website Organic Facts, pregnant women should avoid using this remedy since it is an emenagogue, which means it stimulates blood flow to the pelvic area and could cause premature labor.

Echinacea

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, snoring has been associated with respiratory problems such as bronchitis. One cause of bronchitis is colds and flu. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, echinacea is effective in reducing the possibility of getting a cold. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that echinacea be taken in the dosage of 300 mg three times a day.

Cayenne

Cayenne peppers contain a substance called capsaicin which may be helpful with treating the problem of snoring. According to Dr. David Kiefer, author of "1,000 Cures for 200 Ailments," capsaicin helps to reduce the problem of inflammation and decrease mucous that can cause snoring at night. This remedy is particularly helpful for people who suffer from seasonal allergies. According to Dr. Kiefer, taking one to five drops of a tincture in water on a daily basis is enough to help treat the snoring problem.
