Loose skin after weight loss is a reality to those who have lost a significant amount of weight through diet and exercise, weight loss surgery or illness. Overweight individuals have stretched skin that fit their larger frames, but when weight loss occurs, the skin takes a longer time to shrink in order to accommodate a smaller frame. Maintenance and exercise can help eliminate loose skin quicker than waiting for the skin to shrink over time.
Step 1
Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. This keeps skin properly hydrated and eliminates toxins, advises Janice Elizabeth Small, weight loss coach and author of "The Diet Exit Plan." Hydrated skin retains elasticity, meaning that it can easily fit on a smaller frame rather than maintaining its stretched appearance.
Step 2
Lose weight slowly if you still have excess pounds to take off. Rapid weight loss only worsens loose skin problems. Eating a balanced diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy and whole grains--while leaving out junk foods and saturated fats--provides the necessary nutrients for your skin to remain elastic.
Step 3
Build up lean muscle mass with exercise such as cycling, running and aerobics. Lean muscle mass fills in the gaps left by lost fat deposits, and is healthier, providing a svelte body. Weight training may also be done, however this can provide larger muscle mass and bulk with religious participation.
Step 4
Opt for a lift procedure from your plastic surgeon. Lifts are done as a day surgery that removes excess skin and sutures incisions back after readjusting certain muscles, depending on the procedure site. According to Daily Glow, most procedures allow for you to go home to recover the same day. However, lower extremities may require an overnight stay in the hospital. Consult your physician regarding hospitalization requirements.
