Chinese Herbs for Clear Lungs

Chinese medicine has been used for centuries as a holistic way to cure many illnesses. The basic principle behind the use of this approach is that what affects the body also affects the mind and spirit: that an emotional problem often manifests itself as illness, or "dis-ease." There are many Chinese herbs that help clear the lungs, an organ that is believed to transport "chi" or essential energy to all other organs in the body.

Ophiopogon Root

Also known as Lilyturf root or Radix Ophiopogon, this root is an essential part of Chinese medicine and is found all over China. The root is dried and then given when cough, phlegm or blood is obstructing the lungs' ability to do their job. With its bittersweet taste, ophiopogon root helps to nourish the "yin" element so that balance can be reestablished in the lungs. Clearing away excess heat, the root moistens the lungs while allowing them to discharge excess mucous.

Xing Ren

Xing Ren is also known as apricot seed or Chinese almond and is used in Chinese medicine to sooth inflammation in the lungs that can lead to bronchitis if not attended to in time. Treating symptoms of cough and sputum, Xing Ren helps to clear the airways in the lungs that obstruct free and easy breathing. In this regard, the herb is also effective in cases of asthma, helping to ease breathing by keeping the lungs clear. Xing Ren is often found in Chinese formulas containing a mix of herbs for clearing the lungs.

Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan

Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan is a Chinese formula containing a number of herbs that help to clear the lungs for better breathing. Because the combination of herbs clears heat from the lungs, it is able to sooth coughs and dispel phlegm from the area. A centuries-old mixture that can be purchased today, it is used to relieve the sensation of heaviness in the chest due to incessant coughing and asthma. The formula helps to clear heat from the lungs, allowing the passageways to return to normal as wastes are dissolved.
