Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the South's largest metropolitan areas and a place where parents can bring their children for recreation and relaxation that will keep them active and occupied. Whether your journey into Atlanta takes you downtown or on the outskirts, Atlanta is a destination with lots of fun activities for kids.

Climb Stone Mountain

Just a short drive west of downtown Atlanta is Stone Mountain. This enormous piece of granite covers more than 500 acres and is a great place for adult and children recreation. Take a sky lift ride to the top where parents and kids can hike around the area, get a bird's eye view of downtown Atlanta and run through mazes, rope courses and plummet down a 40-foot slide, according to "Parents" magazine.

Picnic at Olympic Park

After an active morning, take a break by packing a healthy snack or buying a light lunch at the CNN Center and hanging out at the Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. The park has dancing fountains where the kids can run and play before or after the picnic, or parents and kids can cross the street to the Imagine It! Museum where they can crawl through a forest and create sand sculptures.

Chattahoochee Canoe Tours

Just outside of Atlanta in the town of Roswell, the Chattahoochee Nature Center offers guided canoe trips through a natural area teeming with local wildlife. From beavers to snakes to various indigenous birds, the kids can get an up close look at the animals while paddling away on the river.

Silver Comet Trail

The former railroad bed between Atlanta and Birmingham has been partially paved and recycled into a biking and hiking trail near Atlanta. This family-friendly place is a good location for taking a long walk with the kids or hopping on the bikes and speeding down one of the trails in the area.

Picking Fruit

In Southwest Atlanta, in the community of Fayetteville, parents and children will have a great time stocking up on healthy snacks for the ride to other local attractions. Highway 54 is home to several pick-your-own farmlands such as the Adams Farm. Here you can enjoy a picnic of freshly picked fruit or bag it up to take back home. The farms in this area offer rows and rows of strawberries, blueberries and much more that kids are welcome to walk around in and pick and choose as much as they please.
