With an average of 100,000 strands of hair on each person's head, hair can both be fascinating and quirky. Along with the rest of your body, you need to maintain and care for your hair.

If you dread cutting your hair and suffer from split ends, split ends cannot be repaired on their own. Shampooing and conditioning will not effect or correct damaged ends. Split ends need to be trimmed in order to keep long hair looking lustrous and healthy.

If you are trying to grow your hair, take a trip to a tropical climate. Hair grows faster in warmer weather. However, cutting hair doesn't make it grow faster. Another myth about hair is that frequent washing causes hair loss.

By the age of 50, over half of men have male pattern baldness and 40 percent of menopausal women suffer from female pattern hair loss. Check drug labels and side effects, as many prescription medications can cause hair loss (which might not be apparent right away). The average person loses 100 hairs from her scalp each day.

In order to maintain healthy locks, it helps to eat a balanced diet. Food such as eggs, liver, kidneys, herring, salmon, carrots and green vegetables are good choices for healthy hair. Any foods rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin D are also good for hair. Natural hair masks made from avocado, mayonnaise, bananas or jojoba oil provide rich conditioning which hydrates hair.

Sun can also damage the scalp and hair, so remember to wear a hat or rub sunscreen into your scalp. It also helps to use hair products that protect hair from UVA/UVB rays.

Whether short or long, hair is the fastest growing tissue on our body and you need to protect and care for it while you still have it on your head.
