Xenical, the brand name of orlistat, is a prescription medication used for weight loss and weight management. It is indicated in patients who are obese and should be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet. Xenical prevents the body from absorbing 30 percent of the fat contained in food, according to the "Drug Information Handbook." The usual dose in patients 12 years and older is 120 mg three times a day, with each meal that contains fat. Many side effects may occur with the use of this medication and can be discussed with a physician.
Headache
A common side effect that may occur with the administration of Xenical is headache. According to the "Drug Information Handbook," about 31 percent of individuals may experience a headache. As the body adjusts to the new drug, the headache will decrease and eventually stop. If the patient experiences a bothersome headache, he may use a pain reliever, such as Tylenol.
Abdominal Pain and Oily Stools
Xenical may produce abdominal pain or discomfort in about 26 percent of patients. Oily or fatty stools may be seen in up to 20 percent of individuals. Patients may also experience increased bowel movements, increased urgency to have them and inability to control them, reports Xenical.com. Oily spotting or gas with oily discharge may occur in about 25 percent of Xenical users. These side effects are most common during the first one or two months of use and are mild to moderate in severity. "Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach" indicates that patients should limit the intake of dietary fat before beginning therapy with Xenical in order to decrease the initial gastrointestinal complaints. If the patient consumes one meal that is high in fat, the chance of developing these adverse effects is higher.
Upper Respiratory Infection
Xenical may produce upper respiratory infection in up to 38 percent of patients, reports the "Drug Information Handbook." The symptoms of an upper respiratory infection are cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, pain upon swallowing and fever. If a patient experiences any of these symptoms, he should inform his physician right away. The physician will be able to give a proper medical examination and decide if further medical care is necessary.
Back Pain
Back pain is a common occurrence in users of Xenical. About 14 percent of patients may experience back pain; however, this undesired effect will diminish as the body grows accustomed to the medication. If the back pain becomes severe, the patient should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
