Things to Do in Boston, Massachusetts With Kids

The City of Boston offers a multitude of fun and educational activities for both adults and children. Stroll down a historic trail, have a picnic in the park, visit a botanical gardens and learn about the plants and flowers, stop in at the aquarium and explore different kinds of marine life and have an educational time in one of the many museums.

Walking

For some great exercise and some fun, visit the Freedom Trail. This two and a half-mile trail takes you back in time as you stroll along and learn about the 16 different sites you'll see along the way--The Boston Common, The State House, Park Street Church, the site of the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere House and many more.

Parks

The Boston Common is a relaxing place to bring the family. The nearly 50-acre park is a great place for a picnic or a game of catch. Learn about the history this park holds--as the beginning point in the Freedom Trail, the Boston Common was utilized for many things in its long history, from cattle grazing to British troops camping on the grounds.
Also visit the North Point Park, which lies along the New Basin of the Charles River. You'll enjoy a great afternoon with the family just spending time taking in the view.

Gardens/Arboretum

Stroll through the Public Gardens and view all the beautiful trees, plants and flowers. Known as Boston's first botanical gardens, the Public Gardens features weeping willow trees, European and American elms, as well as a number of varieties of roses, bulbs and flowering shrubs. Visit the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and take a leisurely stroll through the extensive array of trees and plants while learning about the arboretum's rich history.

Aquarium

The entire family will enjoy what the New England Aquarium has to offer. Stroll through the facility and learn about the animals while you explore the exhibits. See the seals, penguins, a giant octopus, sharks, sea turtles, moon jelly, among others. Visit exhibits such as the giant ocean tank, the Amazon rainforest, the Edge of the Sea and the Pacific Reef community. The biggest attraction in the aquarium is the giant ocean tank, a four-story coral reef exhibit that is located in the center of the aquarium. The 200,000 gallon tank is home to a plethora of marine life, like stingrays, sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and much more.

Museums

Bring the children to the Museum of Science, where they can learn through exhibits like the 3D Digital Cinema and experience bugs, sharks and Planet You. The museum is also home to a planetarium, where you can immerse yourself in the world of outer space and the starry sky. Or see a movie in the museum's IMAX theater, or feel what it's like to journey through space or exploring the mysteries of the deep sea in the museum's simulator.
During your visit to Boston, be sure to bring the children to the Boston Children's Museum. There, they will be able to learn and explore through hands-on exhibits like Arthur & Friends, the art studio, the construction zone, the Japanese house, PlayLab, PlaySpace, the science playground and much more.
