Things to Do on Sunday in Fort Meyers

The City of Fort Myers is located in southwestern Florida, on the Caloosahatchee River. Because of its proximity to the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico, Fort Myers has been a popular winter resort destination for many years. In fact, Fort Myers is home to the winter estates of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone, amongst other famous people. Because of its proximity to the water, and the many nearby parks, you will find plenty of recreational opportunities here that you can enjoy on a Sunday.

Hiking

If you would like to enjoy a hike while in Fort Myers then you have a number of options. Riverside Park is right in town and has a few nature trails that you can hike. Estero Bay Preserve State Park has approximately 10 miles of hiking trails and you can drive there from downtown Ft. Myers in 20 minutes. You will also find some hiking trails in Mound Key Archaeological State Park, but this park is only accessible by boat. Mound Key is approximately five miles from Estero Bay Preserve State Park.

Cycling

If you have your bicycle with you and want to do some cycling, then drive down to Estero Bay Preserve State Park. You will find that this park has specifically designated cycling trails and areas.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Fort Myers is a perfect place to spend to be if you want to spend your Sunday canoeing or kayaking. The Caloosahatchee River runs right through town and you'll find easy access to it via a number of marinas, docks, and boat ramps. The Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve is another place where you can launch your canoe or kayak, as is the Estero Bay Preserve State Park. You can also canoe or kayak to Mound Key Archaeological State Park from the Estero Bay Preserve.

Swimming

Fort Myers has a number of nearby beaches, including a few on the Caloosahatchee River, where you can go for a swim. Another place where you can enjoy a swim is in the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, which is only about a 25-minute drive from Fort Myers.

Fishing

Fishing is an activity that you can do almost anywhere in the Fort Myers area. Fort Myers itself has many docks, and even a few beaches, from which you can cast a fishing line into the Caloosahatchee River. A 25-minute drive will bring you to the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, where you can also spend some time fishing. Another nearby place where you can go fishing is the J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is approximately 30 minutes from Fort Myers. If you'd prefer to go out on the ocean, then there are also quite a few fishing charter services available for you to hire in and around Fort Myers.

Golfing

If you would rather spend your Sunday on dry land golfing, then you'll be happy to learn that there are two golf courses right in Fort Myers. The Eastwood Golf Course and the Fort Myers Country Club are both 18 hole courses. At the Eastwood, walking is only permitted after 3 p.m., while it is permitted throughout the day at Fort Myers Country Club.
