Growing older is unavoidable, and it may mean fine lines and wrinkles. The thousands of anti-aging products on the market show that retaining a youthful appearance for as long as possible is high in demand. There are ways to prevent wrinkles from appearing prematurely and reducing the amount of wrinkles that already exist.
Avoid Photoaging
Photoaging is a type of aging caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet, or UV rays. According to Skin Care Physicians, repeated exposure to these UV rays breaks down collagen and slows down the process of making new collagen. The chance of premature wrinkles increases for those who intentionally tan in the sun or on tanning beds. To minimize photoaging, always wear a sunblock with a minimum SPF of 30, a hat and clothing that covers your skin.
Avoid Expression Lines
As your body ages, it produces less collagen and begins lacking elasticity-causing lines to remain on the face instead of disappearing as they did before your mid-20s. Squinting can be avoided by wearing sunglasses or seeing an optometrist to determine if you need glasses. Smoking develops expression lines around the mouth because of the continuous puckering. People who frequently smile tend to get more wrinkles around their eyes, but smiling has too many positive impacts on your mental health, so this can be an exception to the expression line rule.
Moisturize
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin becomes drier as we age, which can cause more wrinkles. Using a moisturizer as soon as you get out of the bath or shower will help seal in moisture.
Chemical Peel
Chemical peels use a chemical solution to improve the texture and appearance of skin by removing damaged outer layers. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the process uses phenol, trichloroacetic acid and alphahydroxy acids. Once the peel is complete, the patient will often experience redness and some irritation. Once the skin recovers, the skin will look younger with less visible wrinkles.
Tretinoin
Tretinoin can be prescribed by a dermatologist to reduce wrinkles. According to Doctor's Guide, a tropical tretinoin often given for wrinkles is Renova, since this has proven results in reducing wrinkles associated with aging and frequent sun exposure. Retin-A is another option to reduce the appearance of wrinkles
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion removes dead cells on the top of the skin by abrasion. Since it removes the top layers of skin, this cosmetic procedure can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Sleep on your Back
People who sleep with their face smashed into a pillow are at greater risk for wrinkles than those who sleep on their backs. The lack of elasticity in the skin causes the wrinkles to remain on the face--similar to wrinkles in fabric.
