Although Vitamaster treadmills are no longer in production, they are generally considered of high quality and still can be purchased at secondhand sports stores or online. The Power Pro II model is a bulky treadmill that contains a simple user interface consisting of a calorie and time display, as well as incline, speed and duration controls. You can get started on your Vitamaster Power Pro II simply by pressing a few buttons on the treadmill's console.

Step 1

Place your treadmill on a level surface free of any obstructions. If you wish to minimize vibration or scratching on fragile flooring such as tile or wood, place a treadmill mat between your treadmill and the floor. You can buy a treadmill mat from major retailers such as Target or Sports Authority.

Step 2

Plug your treadmill into a power outlet and turn it on.

Step 3

Step onto the treadmill and use the console to select your type of workout, including your speed, incline and the duration of your workout. Use the up and down arrow buttons to scroll through your workout options and press the "Enter" button to select the options you want. You can adjust the speed or intensity at any time during your workout; for more vigorous exercise, increase the speed and degree of incline.

Step 4

Check your pulse every few minutes by counting your number of heartbeats for six seconds and multiplying by ten. Make sure your heart rate falls into an acceptable range for achieving your fitness goals; refer to your owner's manual for a table of ideal heart rates based on your age and weight.

Step 5

Check the number of calories you have burned by referring to the LED display on the center console.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you wish to adjust all aspects your workout manually from the very beginning, simply press the "quick start" button and start walking. Always warm up by stretching your leg muscles for several minutes before using your treadmill. Stretching minimizes the chance of pulling a muscle during your workout.
  • Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program. Never step onto a moving treadmill. Doing so can cause serious injury. If the belt on your treadmill sticks or moves irregularly, have it serviced by a professional before continuing use. A sticking belt can jar your leg muscles and possibly cause you to fall off the treadmill, which can lead to injury.
