Technical skateboard tricks are more advanced variations of basic tricks. Before attempting technical tricks, you should already have a mastery of beginner skateboard tricks such as the ollie and kickflip. Many technical skateboard tricks are actually just a combination of multiple basic moves. Wear a helmet when learning these tricks to prevent serious injury.
360 Flip
The 360 flip is an impressive trick where the skateboard simultaneously performs a barrel roll and a 360-degree rotation under your feet while you are airborne. This trick is similar to a basic kickflip but with an added rotation. In a kickflip, the board performs a lengthwise rotation like a barrel roll. In the 360 flip, the board adds a rotation parallel to the ground for a particularly exciting stunt. This trick is also known as the tray flip.
Frontside Flip
Similar to the 360 flip, a frontside flip rotates the board 180-degrees while your body also turns 180 degrees. This body rotation is called a body varial. Rotating your body in mid-air while executing the board trick is a considerable challenge. The frontside flip is very technical because you must allow plenty of room under and between your legs for the board to maneuver through its flip and rotation while also spinning your body. You land facing the opposite direction.
540 Underflip
If a full 360-degree rotation isn't impressive enough, the 540 underflip provides enough motion to rouse any bystander. In this trick, the board makes one and a half full rotations while you are airborne, all while executing a lengthwise barrel roll. The underflip is initiated by a pull up on the board with the back foot just before the jump. This maneuver is highly technical because the back foot must simultaneously start the barrel roll and ollie, sending the board and rider into the air.
Pop Shuv-It
The pop shuv-it is an aggressive trick where the board performs a 180-degree rotation during the first part of the jump. At the height of the jump, you sharply push down on the board and snap it quickly back to the ground. The board thus "pops" before you "shuv" it back to the ground. A characteristic popping sound is produced by slamming the board onto the cement.
720 Double Flip
A 720 double flip is essentially two 360 flips back-to-back in mid-air. The board does two full rotations parallel to the ground and also makes two full barrel roll rotations. This trick is highly technical and exceedingly rare. The time required for these rotations to occur means that the board must be high off the ground. Before attempting a trick like the 720 double flip, learn to ollie or jump as high as you can on the board because height is extremely important in this trick.
