The Flat Belly Diet offers a nutritional answer to eliminating stores of belly fat that accumulates around the organs of the body due to an overabundance of cortisol. The diet is based on the use of MUFAs, or monounsaturated fatty acids. The MUFAs are found in certain oils, nuts and seeds, avocados, olives and dark chocolate. Eating wholesome healthy foods and adding these ingredients to the diet in the right proportions can help drastically reduce the accumulation of belly fat.
What to Look for
The oils that are purchased to be used in the diet should cold pressed or expeller pressed. Olive oils are the most common and are clearly labeled as cold pressed or expeller pressed. Nuts and seeds can be raw or roasted but should have no salt or preservatives added. When buying avocados, you should select firm, ripened fruits. Avoid any that have soft spots of dark discolorations. When buying guacamole, make sure to find one with little or no added salt or preservatives. Try to purchase olives with minimal salt content. Organic olives can be hard to find, but they are out there. Dark chocolate can be found almost anywhere. It has little sugar, so the main thing to watch out for here is preservatives and extras such as paraffin. Look for quality products made by a trusted brand. Just because a brand is well known does not make it the best choice. There are several small companies out there who use exceptional techniques to process their products but are not very well known.
Common Pitfalls
Avoid buying just any product. When it comes to the oils, how they are processed is key to how well they will work within the diet program. If you are buying canned or processed foods, read the labels. Again it goes back to the preservatives and how the product is processed. Heat will eliminate many of the active ingredients that are needed to make the diet work. Many times salt and other preservatives will be listed in the ingredients as "natural flavorings" or taste enhancers. They will also list MSG under those headings, so it's best to just avoid foods that have that listed anywhere on the label. Some of these products may be expensive, but you may not be able to find the needed quality at a lower price.
