Holistic medicine is designed to treat the whole body, not just a specific ailment. As many as 200 viruses are responsible for the 1 billion colds Americans get each year, according to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies." Decongestants often are overused and they can produce other unwanted side effects. Most colds can be treated holistically at home.

Rest

Many people try to push themselves to maintain their normal routines, but lack of sleep and stress can compromise your immune system. Rest as much as possible while your body is recovering to help keep your immune system strong. Practice some form of relaxation or visualize your body fighting and beating the flu.

Diet

Avoid dairy products during your cold, as dairy can thicken mucus. Try to maintain a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins A, B and C. Chicken soup has been used to treat colds since the 12th century, according to "The Medical Advisor." Garlic and onions contain antiviral properties. Alive magazine recommends trying a paste of mustard or nutmeg on the forehead for headaches associated with the flu. Drink plenty of clear fluids to keep from becoming dehydrated.

Aromatherapy

Inhale the herbal steam from eucalyptus, wintergreen or peppermint to relieve sinus congestion, "The Medical Advisor" recommends. Add fresh leaves or a few drops of oil from these herbs and pour in boiling water to kill germs on contact, but be cautious of burning yourself from the steam. Place a towel over your head to create a tent to keep steam from escaping.

Echinacea

Echinacea is an herbal remedy that boosts the immune system, according to Alive magazine. Some people take an echinacea supplement when they feel a cold coming on. It can also be found in herbal tea form.

Zinc

Look for lozenges containing zinc to help cut down on the length of your illness. Zinc can dramatically reduce the length of your cold as well as relieve a dry, irritated throat, according to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies."

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is important to the function of the immune system. It can also help reduce coughing, sneezing and other symptoms. Drink orange juice, add a slice of lemon or lime to your water or take 100 milligrams to 500 milligrams of vitamin C supplements daily.
