Pain arises from many causes and takes many forms. Mild and moderate pain usually responds well to home care, but if you experience severe or chronic pain, consult your healthcare professional. Homeopathic remedies address many different kinds of pain, and comparing your symptoms to the symptom picture for each remedy--a list of all the symptoms the remedy addresses--helps you select the appropriate remedy for your pain.
Arnica Montana
Arnica is typically the first choice for bruising and trauma, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. This remedy also addresses sprains, strains and postsurgical pain. Like all homeopathic remedies, arnica is available as sugar pellets that you take sublingually. Homeopathic arnica also comes as a cream, gel or ointment for topical application. Topical uses for arnica include bruises, aching muscles or arthritis pain.
Apis Mellifica
The apis remedy is made from the honeybee and addresses pain such as that experienced with a bee sting--burning, stinging discomfort that is relieved by cold and accompanied by swelling. A lack of thirst is a key indicator for the use of apis. The pain decreases with motion, when you are sitting up and when you are in fresh air, but increases with touch, pressure and heat.
Hypericum Perforatum
Hypericum addresses extreme pain, especially the kind that results from nerve injuries. Injuries to the head and spine also indicate the use of hypericum. Improvement occurs when lying face-down or bending your head backward, but jarring motions, a change of weather and fog make the pain worse. Consider this remedy after surgery, dental work or for painful puncture wounds.
Bryonia Alba
The bryonia symptom picture includes a severe headache with pressure, stitching pain, sprains, rheumatism and abdominal pain, including heartburn or indigestion. Excessive thirst is characteristic of bryonia, as is extreme irritability with a desire to be alone. The pain improves with cold air, pressure, and lying on the painful side, but increases with deep breathing, coughing, overheating or any motion.
Colocynth
Abdominal pain often indicates colocynth. This remedy's symptom picture includes violent cramping pain that is relieved by doubling over, pain on the left side, pain that makes you cry out, and pain accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. The pain improves with hard pressure and lying on your abdomen, but is worse in drafts, when you are at rest or if you become angry. Consider colocynth as an adjunct treatment for kidney and gallstone pain, peritonitis or sciatica.
Magnesia Phosphorica
Magnesia is also often useful for abdominal pain. This remedy also addresses cramping pain that is relieved by doubling over; however, the pain typically occurs on the right side. The pain that matches the magnesia symptom picture is a shooting pain that comes and goes suddenly. Warmth and pressure relieve this pain. The pain is worse in the cold, upon moving or being touched, and at night. Colic, neuralgia or a toothache may indicate magnesia.
