North Myrtle Beach is a popular tourist destination and coastal city located on the Grand Strand in South Carolina. The Grand Strand is a 60-mile stretch of white sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. With so much sun, sea and beauty, you don't have to spend any money to enjoy yourself. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy that won't cost you a dime.

Build a Sandcastle

Head for the beach with buckets and shovels and build yourself a sandcastle. If you're lucky enough to visit during the first week of June, venture down the beach to see sand creations at the Myrtle Beach Open Sand Sculpting Competition.

Search for Treasure

North Myrtle Beach offers miles of beautiful beaches. Sure you can sunbathe, but there are plenty of treasures to be found: shells, sea glass, shark teeth and driftwood. If searching for real buried treasure, metal detectors are allowed on most beaches. The best time to look for shells is early in the morning, at low tide and after a storm.

Body Surf

The waters off North Myrtle Beach offer the perfect conditions for body surfing. All that you require is a bathing suit for hours of fun. If you have your own boogie board, enjoy an afternoon boogie boarding in the Atlantic Ocean.

Go Crabbing

Go crabbing at Russell Burgess Coastal Preserve on Cherry Grove Marsh. Crabbing is permitted from anywhere except for the pier. South of Myrtle Beach, but just minutes away, is Garden City Beach. Parking is free and there's great crabbing under the pier. You can also stroll the pier, have a picnic, or cook yourself a meal on the outdoor barbecue stands that are available.

Festivals and Concerts

In the summer months, you can find free festivals and concerts every weekend in North Myrtle Beach. If you're in town in June, make sure that you don't miss the annual Riverfest and Blue Crab festivals. Enjoy free concerts at McLean Park every third Friday of the month between May and September. There is free music for you to enjoy on Main Street the first Thursday of every month starting at 6:30 p.m.

See the Salt Marshes

Commonly known as the Alligator Adventure Marsh walk, the boardwalk at Barefoot Landing affords you scenic views of the marsh. Wooden boardwalks extend over salt marshes and several small islands at Vereen Memorial Park and Gardens. A wide observation deck allows you to overlook the Intracoastal Waterway and view the Little River, all for free. Heritage Shores Nature Preserve is also free and offers you the opportunity to watch native birds in their natural habitat.

Window Shopping

Go window shopping at Barefoot Landing which houses more than 100 shops and retails stores. Barefoot Landing also offers nightly entertainment in the summer months as well as firework displays on Monday evenings to enjoy.
