Preparing for the process of pregnancy and delivering a baby can be stressful and overwhelming. As your body changes and expands, and hormones take over, figuring out what your body requires can be discovered through practicing Kundalini Yoga, a meditative practice that supports the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the mother through pregnancy and childbirth.
What is Kundalini Yoga?
Guru Rattana, Ph.D., of KundaliniYoga.org describes Kundalini yoga as a means of facilitating a relationship between our body and the universe. Author and teacher, Rattana sees Kundalini yoga as not only a physical relationship, but a spiritual relationship with God.
Awareness
Practicing Kundalini yoga helps to expand our abilities and choices by broadening our awareness of everything around us. Bringing the mental, emotional and physical into alignment through Kundalini yoga allows us to express our creative side and connect with our soul.
How Does it Work?
The base of energy of Kundalini yoga is at the center of the navel. Going up from the navel, the Kundalini energy travels up over the head then down to the bottom of the spine, returning back to the center of the navel. The raising of the Kundalini lifts the consciousness and connects us with God and the universe.
Kundalini Yoga in Practice
A typical Kundalini yoga class begins with a chant sitting cross-legged in namaste position. The pregnant mothers perform stretches, breathing and poses to help warm up the muscles of the spine and open the pelvis. In the article "Special Delivery" Davi Kaur Khalsa, R.N. and certified childbirth educator, then has the women hold each others wrists and support each other in doing half-squats. The pregnant mothers engage in dance and enjoy the process of letting go and moving their bodies. Following the dance, the women relax and meditate, then talk about their experiences in doing Kundalini yoga.
Preparing Baby
Kundalini yoga classes help prepare pregnant mothers for the physical demands of going through the birthing process, as well as utilizing breathing and meditation to help the baby adopt the breath of the mother. Kundalini views the yoga exercises as a means to send spiritual and meditative energy down into the pelvis, connecting with the baby and preparing for its arrival.
