Atlantic City, New Jersey is known for its lively wooden boardwalk, towering casinos and late-night fun however active individuals can also enjoy a wide array of recreational activities. Aside from swimming, you can also explore the waters by windsurfing and kayaking. Take a walking tour down the boardwalk or grab your bike and work up a sweat. When its time for grub, find healthy eats and pick from a selection of fresh seafood caught right from the Jersey shore waters.
Swim and Surf
Swim in the 3.4-mile Atlantic City Beach that begins from Jackson Avenue to the Maine Avenue in the inlet. Jersey Shore sandy beaches typically have a gradual slope as you enter to swim in and wade along its smooth sand bar. Aside from swimming, you can also surf in the beach. Bring your own or rent one from local shops and ride the waves on three designated surfing areas including Crystal Beach at New Hampshire Avenue, Downtown Beach at Raleigh Avenue and Delaware Avenue Beach.
Kayaking
Bring your kayak and windsurf boards at Jackson Avenue Beach to explore the Atlantic Ocean by paddling and windsurfing. This area is designated for these activities only and a no bathing zone rule is enforced. Kayaking tours are also offered in various locations allowing you to enjoy the scenery, learn more about the Jersey waters and view wildlife.
Fishing
Fishing is another recreational activity to enjoy in the Jersey shore. Fish on the jetties along Oriental and Maine Avenue boardwalk or the nearby inlet. You can also charter a fishing boat for a guided fishing trip for species like flounder, Spanish mackerel, striped bass, seabass, bluefish and more. Full-day and half-day guide fishing trips are offered in the marinas. Guided fishing trips typically include all the necessary fishing gear and equipment. If fishing on your your own, consider visiting one of the many local bait and tackle shops in the area for some fishing tips and techniques as well as gear rental.
Boardwalk
Take a leisurely stroll down Atlantic City's boardwalk--the first one ever constructed in the United States. You can also run or bicycle for over four miles long as you pass through a lively assortment of local shops, eateries and gaming entertainments. For a longer exercise, tread the entire 5.75 mile boardwalk as it combines with the Ventnor Boardwalk. Note that bicycling is only permitted between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily so wake up early to enjoy the sunrise and water views as you to pedal through this historic boardwalk. Bike rentals are available from various locations along the boardwalk.
Food
Sample fresh, healthy seafood at various events in the area like the Annual New Jersey Seafood Festival and the Annual Baymen's Seafood and Music Festival, both held in June. Enjoy plenty of entertainment, family activities, craft vendors and boat rides. Seafood items to try include Jersey fresh crabs, clams, crabs, shrimp and scallops.
