Menopausal hair loss occurs as hormone levels rapidly decline, increasing the risk of female pattern baldness. Some women may also be predisposed to genetic hair loss and find this condition worsens during menopause. Treatments for hair loss range from over-the-counter methods to the natural holistic approach; however, prevention is more ideal, as it ensures proper hair growth while eliminating hair loss. Taking a few preventative measures can help make this menopausal symptom less of a concern.
Step 1
Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines and herring two to three times a day. Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for promoting hair growth while preventing hair loss through environmental and hormonal factors.
Flax seed sprinkled on salads or cereals also provides ideal servings of omega-3 fatty acids to your diet, says Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D.
Step 2
Take 500 mg of primrose oil, available in gel capsule, one time daily. Evening primrose oil contains phytoestrogens that provide hormonal balance during menopause. This in turn helps alleviate symptoms of menopause such as hair loss. Dr. Weil suggests taking evening primrose oil in conjunction with omega 3 fatty acid consumption.
Step 3
Allow hair to air dry after washing. Heat styling and pulling at wet hair during the drying process damages hair follicles and prevents proper hair growth. Skin and hair go through many changes during menopause, leaving hair more susceptible to breakage. Air drying and gentle styling will ensure that hair remains healthy and intact. Avoid tight hair styles such as ponytails, buns and braids as well.
Step 4
Apply minoxidil to your scalp where hair appears to be thinning. Minoxidil is an FDA-approved treatment for preventing and reversing hair loss in women as well as men. It is sold over-the-counter and actually retards hair thinning by inhibiting hair cycle resting phases. According to the Mayo Clinic, this treatment may not work on all users.
