While hair grows naturally on men's faces, there are certain steps you must take to groom a beard and mustache so that they will grow evenly during the process. Once you've reached your goal, daily maintenance is required to maintain a clean appearance. Proper shaving to keep a style is paramount. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 78 percent of men experience skin irritation from shaving.
Grow It
Once you've decided to sport a beard or mustache, you must prepare for a few weeks or months of scruffiness before you can really get into styling it. According to stylists at Emerson Salon, everyone's facial hair grows at a different pace and in varying degrees. For example, some men grow facial hair evenly all over, while others may grow sideburns and chin hair before their mustache fills out. You'll have to wait at least a few months to find out if you even can grow facial hair sufficiently to support a decent beard. As you watch the growth and your individual growing patterns, you'll be in a better position to decide how you want to style it and what aspects you may have to forgo. For example, if you have bald spots on your chin, you may have to stick with a mustache.
Style It
After deciding the shape and size of your beard and/or your mustache, you need to use the right tools and effective lighting to shape your facial hair. Make sure your lighting is bright enough that you can see all sides of your face equally. Comb the hair in the same direction before trimming it. Gauge the effectiveness of your trimming to make sure both sides are even, using the sides of your mouth as a guide.
Groom It
Facial hair typically is tough and wiry, going off in wild directions if not groomed properly. Use a softening conditioner on your facial hair when you shower. Leave the conditioner on the hair while you complete your shower and then rinse it out just before you exit the shower. After cutting off strays and evening out the sides of your style, dab a small amount of mustache wax or other hair styling product into a palm of your hand. Rub your hands together and run them over the hair to keep it in place all day.
