Prostate Cancer and Diet

A person suffering from prostate cancer has to cope with multiple problems. Apart from the cancer that often drains all the energy out of a person's body, the patient also has to endure the side effects of cancer treatments. Therefore, it is very important to eat a balanced and healthy diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals, as the body needs all the strength it can get from them. While suffering from cancer, the body is in repair mode, where it is not only fighting with prostate cancer, but is also rebuilding the healthy cells which are destroyed by chemotherapy.

The patient must increase the consumption of all the essential food groups. He will need to eat as many brightly colored vegetables and fruits as possible, because there are many nutrients in these that help in fighting cancer. Cooking food in olive oil is a good idea, as it is much healthier than vegetable oil.

Red meat should be avoided at any cost. Patients should rather eat cold water fish like sardines, trout and salmon. All kinds of fried foods and dishes high in calorie content must be avoided, as these foods are very high in trans fats, which promote cancer. The patient must also avoid food items which are rich in calcium, as calcium can stimulate prostate cancer.

Rather than coffee or other caffeinated beverages, the patient should drink fruit and vegetable juice. Green tea is also very beneficial for people with prostate cancer. Red grapes are very good, so the patient may eat them or drink some grape juice or red wine. Doctor may prescribe many supplements like Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin E, etc. These supplements are essential for the body and thus should be taken as prescribed.

Besides the diet, the patient should also follow a healthy lifestyle that should include regular exercise, eating meals on time and staying positive even in hard times.
