The Pilates reformer is a spring-loaded cable exercise machine, comprised of a gliding carriage, a pulley system, a foot bar and numerous optional add-on devices. Pilates equipment manufacturers sell reformers suitable for private Pilates studios, physical therapy clinics, group exercise studios and home use. The reformer accommodates most of the exercises in the Pilates mat series.
Added Resistance
A series of springs add resistance to the Pilates exercises, providing an effective way to take your mat workout to the next level. The gliding carriage varies the resistance, so that the exercise is more challenging when your muscles are in the contracted or strongest position, and easier when your muscles are in the fully stretched or weakest position.
Versatile
Most exercise machines work one or two muscle groups. The Pilates reformer facilitates exercise for all of the muscles in the body, providing an effective and time-efficient exercise devise. The reformer is particularly helpful for anyone interested in home exercise equipment, because it eliminates the necessity of purchasing multiple pieces of fitness equipment.
Postural Alignment
Pilates mat and equipment exercises both improve posture, but the reformer has special features that help you to maintain comfort and correct alignment. These include shoulder pad, neck support, and carriage stops, which adjust according to your leg and torso length.
Additional Exercises
The reformer accommodates more than 200 exercises. Many of these are specific to the machine. The standing exercises, for example, use the carriage's gliding movements to work the inner and outer thigh muscles, as well as the hamstrings, quadriceps and gluteal muscles.
Movement Fluidity
The Pilates reformer offers resistance in both parts of the exercise, thereby discouraging the tendency toward using momentum on the return phase of the exercise. This feature improves coordination and overall movement quality.
