Ayurvedic Herbs for Hair Loss

Indian Ayurvedic medicine is 5,000-year-old tradition. Ayurveda translates to "the science of life" and encompasses a body of knowledge and collection of practices that is used to achieve harmony of body, mind and spirit, according to "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies." Hair loss is often attributed to imbalance in the doshas--or the energies of mind, body and spirit. Medical science has begun to investigate Ayurveda, but there is little scientific evidence as to its efficacy or safety, so please consult a physician before attempting naturopathic treatments at home.

Aloe Vera

According to Ayurveda, aloe vera corrects the metabolic energy associated with early hair loss. Traditionally, a third of a cup of aloe vera juice daily is ingested for up to three months. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database states that aloe gel is well tolerated orally and the latex from the leaf skin can cause diarrhea and more serious problems if used long-term. There is no scientific evidence supporting the use of aloe vera for hair loss.

Coconut and Brahmi Oil

Massaging the scalp with coconut oil or brahmi oil is believed to increase blood flow to the hair follicles, nourishing the scalp and stimulating hair growth. Massage also releases muscle tension and stress that may relieve hair loss, according to "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies." The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database reports preliminary scientific evidence supporting the use of coconut oil to treat head lice and brahmi to improve memory, but there is no evidence suggesting that either affect hair growth.

Ashwagandha

Ashwangandha is an herb commonly used in Ayurveda. It's properties include pain and stress relief and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, according to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. Pita energy is believed to encompass fire and water and can lead to emotions such as anger and hatred when out of balance, according to "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies." Excess pita predisposes a person to hair loss. Ashwagandha is taken in tea or capsule form in doses of up to six grams daily to help to realign pita.
