There are many activities and attractions in Boston that can help kids stay active and healthy. There are many outdoor activities, but options for a rainy day as well. Take advantage of the coastal location, rich history and interesting museums to help teach your children about living a healthy lifestyle.

Swan Boats

The swan boats are located in the pond of Boston Public Garden, known as the Boston Common by locals. After a few hours spent walking, exploring or climbing on the jungle gyms, allow a little time to wind down by treating the kids to a ride on these boats. Powered by operators using pedals, the swan boats are a Boston tradition that dates back to the 1870s. The boats were featured in two books, including "Make Way for Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey. The kids can slowly cruise along the pond in the swan boats as an inexpensive activity.

Walking Tours

There are many walking tours available in the city. Boston by Little Feet is a walking tour that is offered by the tour company Boston by Foot. This particular tour is designed to be kid-friendly. The tour is perfect for children ages 6 to 12. Total walking time for Boston by Little Feet is about an hour.

Boston Children's Museum

The Boston Children's Museum made Parents Magazine's list of 10 Best Children's Museums. There are exhibits for children of all ages. Many are hands-on, and all encourage learning or creativity. Kid Power encourages the whole family to adopt a healthy lifestyle by teaching visitors how to make wise food choices and to exercise more. The New Balance Climb is a three-story exhibit on which visitors are invited to climb and explore.

Water Sports

Community Boating offers a program for children ages 10 to 18. Dubbed the Junior Program, these summer classes include sailing, wind surfing and kayaking. While participating in the program, the kids can use the boats as much as they want. Kids must be able to swim before taking part in the Junior Program. As of 2010, it only cost $1 to take part in the Junior Program.

Castle Island

Castle Island, located in South Boston, is home to an 18th century fort, but that is not what draws hundreds of visitors each day. There are over 25 acres on which to fly kites, rollerblade, walk and play. There is a playground with several climbing structures. The fort sits atop a hill that kids love to run up and then roll down.
The Sugar Bowl is a walkway that reaches out over the water, and is a very popular spot with walkers and runners.
Castle Island is located next to a sandy beach, so the kids can also swim and play in the sand if you visit during the summer months.
